What is a Plotter?

A Plotter is similar to a printer, but a plotter is usually much larger in scale and is for different purposes then a traditional printer would be used for.

What is a plotter used for?

A plotter is used for printing vector graphics, CAD (computer aided designs) designs, blueprints, etc. Plotters are also used to make hard copies of schematics or other similar applications.

How do plotters print?

Plotters use a pen-like instrument to draw images on the paper rather than printing in pixels and dots like traditional printers do.

Although, plotters are slowly being phased out by wide-format printers.

Plotter Advantages

  • Plotters can print on extremely large sheets of paper and still maintain high a resolution.
  • Plotters can print on a variety of materials from aluminum and sheet steel, to plywood, plastic, and cardboard.
  • Plotter images can be drawn 1000's of times without any losing image quality.

Plotter Disadvantages

  • Plotters are a bit large compared to traditional multi-function printers.
  • Plotters cost a lot more than traditional printers do.
